Important Notice Regarding Solar Eclipse and Extended School Day...Dismissal at 3:50 PM on Monday, August 21

As many of you know, next Monday, August 21, we will experience a near total solar eclipse from approximately 1:00-4:00 pm. A solar eclipse occurs when the moon completely covers the sun. While we are not located in the area for a total eclipse, we will still be able to view 93% of totality.
This will be an extraordinary educational opportunity for our students as the last solar eclipse occurred in the USA in 1918. I know many of our schools have already planned special activities or lessons for this day to accompany the event. While the event is extremely exciting for our students, we must also acknowledge the importance of proper eye safety. Our district has purchased NASA-approved, ISO-certified viewing glasses for all students and staff members to help us navigate this day safely. Like any other day, looking directly into the sun without proper protection can damage eye tissue; this becomes much more of a risk when looking at the sky to see an eclipse. Normally, our bodies instinctively protect us from harm via reflexive squinting/blinking and constriction of our pupils in response to the brightness of the sun. During an eclipse, however, the shadow created makes it dark enough to fool our body's natural defense mechanisms, and partial but permanent eye damage may occur without proper eyewear for viewing the eclipse. The risk of eye damage is present for the entire eclipse....

6th Grade Trip to Frankfort

On March 15th our 6th grade class went on a field trip to Frankfort. The trip included a tour of our current state Capitol building, a tour of the KY History Museum, and a tour of the Old State Capitol. The students learned new things about the three levels of government which govern our state, as well as interesting facts and information from the history of our state from prehistoric time up to current day.

ACT on March 21st! ACT
On Tuesday, March 21, 2017, your junior son or daughter will be taking the ACT (American College Test) at Dayton High School. The Kentucky Department of Education is providing this opportunity free of cost for all 11th grade students throughout the Commonwealth. The scores on the ACT exam will count as the official and required pre-admission testing for most colleges and universities.
This testing day is very important and below are a few tips that will help your student perform to his/her fullest potential:
• Make sure they get plenty of sleep (think 8-9 hours) the night before the ACT, as well as the week leading up to the test
• Eat a good breakfast the morning of the test. Avoid sugar, which can cause a brief energy rush but then send you crashing. Make sure to hydrate with a few glasses of water.
• Make sure they get an early start to the day to get their blood flowing and their brain functioning.
Testing will begin at approximately 8:15 a.m. Your student should arrive early if they would like to have breakfast at school before the test begins and any student arriving after the test begins, will not be allowed to participate.

Washington DC Trip - Cancelled

It saddens me to announce that with the first payment deadline just a few short days away, the 8th/9th grade Washington DC trip does not look  like its going to happen.  As of today I only have five people who have made any payment and the travel company is in dire need of payments in order to reserve accommodations.  So unfortunately, I am making the difficult decision to cancel the Washington DC trip for the 2016-2017 school year.  Any person who has made payments towards the trip will be receiving a refund check within the next week.

Thank You for Your Understanding,

Mrs. Beth Fields-Hunt

DHS/DMS project update!

We wanted to provide everyone with an update on the Dayton High School Construction Project that is getting ready to start a 1.6 million dollar building project. There have been several questions asked about the status of the project and when it will be completed. The Board of Education accepted the bid for the project from Leo Brielmaier Co. on October 13th. We met with their company and several of their sub-contractors last Thursday to discuss timelines and other details of the project. We are excited to say that they will start construction around Nov. 14th and are expected to complete the project by July 1st , 2017.

We want to remind everyone that funding for this project comes from state building funds that can only be used for building improvements. In 2013 we used this same pool of money to make 1.3 million to Lincoln Elementary School where we added a secure entrance, new floors, new restrooms, new Smartboard technology, new gym floor, and much more....

School Report Card Shows DHS/DMS Distinguished and District Proficient

Here We GROW Again!  DHS/DMS Distinguished Schools

District is a Kentucky Proficient District

Results from our spring 2016 assessments are in and the news is fabulous.  For the first time our District has been named a Kentucky Proficient District and our High School and Middle School have earned the highest standard, being named Kentucky Distinguished Schools.  Our Elementary school showed continued progress and improved their overall accountability score by 0.7 and is only 1.7 points from reaching the proficiency level.

We are very proud of the effort of our students, staff, and community to reach these high levels of achievement.  Our students have worked hard and are seeing that they can learn at high levels when they put their minds to it.  Our staff have inspired and engaged students at all levels.  Inspired and engaged students equal positive growth and we are clearly seeing the results.

We also want to take a moment to thank our community, parents, and families for trusting us and working with us to grow forward.

Together we GROW forward!

Respectfully submitted,

Jay Brewer

Proudly serving as Superintendent of Dayton Independent Schools
